Tip #2 - Changing your web browser's cookie settings


In order to use most web pages to their fullest, your web browser needs to be able to accept cookies.

Cookies are simply text files on your computer to which a web site will write your chosen preferences. The cookie text file is stored on your computer hard drive only, usually in the same directory as the files for your web browser. The information stored in an eBay cookie is not stored on the web site's side!

eBay most popular features must use cookies in order to work properly. Two of the most important (but by no means, the only) eBay features which use cookies are the Sign In feature and the eBay Picture Services feature (iPix). If your web browser is not set to accept cookies, you will not be able to use either of these features to the fullest advantage.

Here are the steps for making sure that your web browser is set up to accept cookies. There are two separate sets of instructions

Internet Explorer versions 5.0 and below

Internet Explorer versions 6.0 and above


For Internet Explorer versions 5.0 and below:

Go to the menu bar on Internet Explorer (the menu bar is the list of commands on the top of any Windows application) and look for the option for Tools. Select it and then click Internet Options (Fig.1)

In the next window, select the top tab for "Security" and make sure the icon for Internet is highlighted. Then look for and click the button for "Custom Level..." at the bottom of the window (Fig. 2).

This will bring up the Security Settings window. Scroll down and look for the section for Cookies. Make sure that the Enable option is checked for both "Allow cookies that are stored on your computer" and "Allow per-session cookies (not stored)" as in Fig. 3

Click OK, (the Security Settings window will close) then click Apply and OK on the Internet Options window.


For Netscape:

In a Netscape browser, select the option for Preferences under the menu command for Edit (Fig. 4)

In the Preferences window, highlight the option  for Advanced in the left hand pane. Make sure that the option for Cookies is set to Accept all cookies (Fig. 4)

Click OK.

Now you can use all of eBay's time saving features!

For Internet Explorer versions 6.0 and above:

On the Internet Explorer toolbar, click on Tools and then click the menu item for "Internet Options..." (Fig. 5)

In the resulting Internet Options window, select the Privacy tab and click on the button labeled "Edit" in the Web Sites frame (located at the bottom of the window.) (Fig. 6)

This will bring up the Per Site Privacy Actions window where you can add websites by name and either Allow or Block their cookies. (Fig. 7)

NOTE: In order to use eBay correctly and efficiently and in order to have access to all of eBay's user features, you MUST allow cookies from www.ebay.com 

Type in www.ebay.com in the window marked Address of Web site: and click the button marked "Allow"

Once you have added the websites for which you wish to allow or block cookies, Click the button marked OK and then in the Internet Options window, click the Button marked OK.
